Amateur Boxing: Tipon Wins Lone Philippine Tammer Cup Gold
Tampere, Finland - Joan Tipon defeated Canadian Isho Shiba, 21-7, to win the Bantamweight Division gold in the Tammer Cup International Boxing Championships.
The gold medal is the only gold medal won by the Philippines which ended up in 4th place overall with a 1-2-2 gold-silver-bronze tally. France snagged the overall title with 5 golds with Australia and Hungary finishing 2nd and 3rd place respectively with 2 gold medals each.
Violito Payla lost the Light Flyweight gold to rapid-punching Hungarian Pal Bedak, 30-16.
Genebert Basadre faded in the homestretch to lose by countback to Frenchman Jean Gomis in the Lightweight final. Basadre was ahead by six points in the fourth and final round but was unable to keep pace with the attacking Gomis, who forced an 18-18 tie before winning the gold in the countback.
Light Welterweight Delfin Boholst and Welterweight Francis Joven claimed the bronze medals for the Philippine team.
Gerry Penalosa Scores a Monumental Win In Texas
Don Haskins Center, El Paso, TX, USA - Veteran campaigner Gerry Penalosa scored a very big KO win over former WBO Bantamweight Champ and reigning WBO Latino Bantamweight Champ, Mauricio "Cry Baby" Martinez of Panama. Using very powerful right hooks and left straights, Penalosa dropped his opponent as early as the 1st round. Penalosa continued his dominance and in the 3rd round was able to cut the Panamanian. Martinez was dropped once more in the 4th round. And then finally Martinez kissed the canvas in the 1:06 mark of the 9th round. A TKO win was then awarded to the 34 yrs-old Penalosa.
It was a pity that HBO dropped the match from thew PPV. This is the reason why Solar Sports was not able to cover it. Golden Boy Promotions is now eyeing a title shot for Penalosa who improved his record to 51-5-2 (34KOs). Martinez drops to 31-7-1 (21KOs).
ALA Boys Victorious In War In The Ring
Sports and Cultural Complex, Mandaue City, Philippines - Young stars of the famous ALA Stable of Cebu showed their stuff in Mandaue City, Saturday night (October 21st). Z "The Dream" Gorres, more popularly known for his methodical boxing skills rather than his punching power, showcased his stopping ability. Gorres outboxed Indonesian Sonny Manakane prompting the latter's corner to throw in the towel at the 4th round of their supposedly 10-round super flyweight fight. Z's record now improves to 26-1-1 (14KOs) and his promotional outfit, Golden Boy Promotions, is eyeing a title shot for him, possibly in December against WBO Super Flyweight champ Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel. Meanwhile, Manakane's record dropped to 9-3-1 (4KOs). Ironically, in the main undercard, Alex John "Bazooka" Banal, known for his magnificent punching power, scored a Unanimous Decision win. AJ won over Indonesian Angky Angkota, with scores: 90-99, 89-100, 91-98. AJ's record now stands 10-0-1 (8KOs) and Angkota drops to 17-4 (11KOs).

Flyweight Bogie "Charles" Delada TKO'ed Mario Jun de Asis within 24secs of their supposedly 8-round encounter. Bogie improved his unblemished record to 11-0 (9KOs) while de Asis dropped to a dismal 5-9-3 (2KOs) record. Flyweight Benedict Suico finished off veteran Gerald Edwin Ubatay in the 2:02 mark of the 2nd round of the supposely 10-rounder. Benedict's record improved to 13-2-0 (10KOs) as Gerald dropped to a dismal 12-29-6 (1KO).In a battle of the undefeated, impressive 17 yrs-old, Eden Sonsona, defended his Philippine Super Flyweight Title against erstwhile undefeated Jerope Mercado. The referee stopped the fight at the 1:02 mark of the 9th round, giving Sonsona the TKO win. Sonsona now has a 15-1 (7KOs) and Mercado now has a 10-1-1 (4KOs) record.Randy "Fists of Stone" Suico captured the vacant OPBF Lightweight Title by defeating Thai Pongpetch Muangsurin. The fight was halted by Referee Bruce McTavish at the 2:08 mark of the 4th round. Randy improved to 25-3 (22KOs) while Muangsurin dropped to 9-15 (7KOs).
The Filipino Flash Successfully Defended His NABF Super Flyweight Crown
Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, NV, USA - Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire has successfully defended his (North American Boxing Federation) NABF Super Flyweight Title against veteran Mexican Oscar "Pajarito"Andrade, October 7th.Nonito won via a Unanimous Decision (UD). The judges scored the bout: Robert Hoyle 118-109, Duane Ford 116-111 and David Sutherland 116-111.Andrade already held the NABF Super Flyweight once, and he successfully defended it once also. He lost the title to another Filipino boxing star, Gerry Penalosa, when they duked it out in California May of 2002.Donaire improved to 16-1 (9KOs) while Andrade drops to 35-25-1 (18KOs)
Allanic Wins In Japan
IMP Hall, Osaka, Japan - Robert "Cliff Smart" Allanic is very successful in his first bout outside of Philippine shores. Allanic drops Japanese Hiroaki Kusunoki to win via TKO. The referee halted the fight in the 2:47 mark of the 8th round of the supposedly 10-round super flyweight match-up. The win brings Allanic to a 15-1 (7KOs) record as the Kusunoki drops to 10-5-2 (8KOs).
Sorolla Wins 2nd WBO Crown
Philippines - Benjie Sorolla defeated Thai Samransak Singmanassak via TKO at the 1:01 mark of the 2nd round to snag the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Minimumweight Title.Sorolla also holds the WBO Asia Pacific Minimumweight Title and the WBF International Minimumweight Title. Inspite the win and his achievements, spectators are not impressed by the Sorolla's talent. Manager Martin Elorde is being urged by locals to build-up a more worthy talent.Benjie improved his record to 21-9-3 (6KOs) while Singmanassak dropped to 30-16-1 (25KOs).
Danilo Lerio Displays Boxing Repertoire
West Rembo, Makati, Philippines - Former amateur stand-out Danilo Lerio has been showing his wares in the professional ranks. Lerio defeated a very game Ryan Maliteg now 9-2, October 8, via a very close Split Decision. A month ago Lerio also defeated Bert Gawat, now 2-8, on points. Lerio now has an 11-1 (1KO) record.
Another Convincing Win For Gabi
Desert Diamond Casino, Tucson, AZ, USA - Diosdado "Prince" Gabi has another convincing win, this time against Gabi's victim was Mexican youngster, Felipe Rivas. Rivas retired 3mins into the 1st round after taking a beating from Gabi.The October 6th fight was an 8-rounder in the flyweight division as Gabi moved back down to flyweight after a very decisive 1st round TKO win against Mauricio Pastrana in the bantamweight division.Gabi's record is now improved to 28-3-1 (20KOs) as Rivas dropped to a nasty 4-4-1 (1KO) slate.
The Czar Loses Shamefully, Bazooka Wins Again
Island City Mall, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines - The pride of Bohol, Caesar "The Czar" Amonsot, shamefully lost to Indonesian Simson "The Terminator" Butar Butar before his adoring home crowd. Amonsot was dropped 47 seconds into the 1st round and he never got the strength to stand up again. Referee Bruce McTavish stopped the fight as Amonsot hopelessly tried to stand up but was not able to. A week before the fight, Amonsot was reported to have been kicked out of the very famous ALA Boxing Stable for being caught smoking and drinking. Few days before the fight, he was stripped of the WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight Title he was supposed to defend for being overweight. Amonsot's record dropped to 17-2-1 (10KOs), his two losses were both dealt by Butar Butar. Meanwhile, the latter improved to 15-5-1 (11KOs).
In the co-featured bout, rising star Alex John "Bazooka" Banal won very convincingly against undefeated Thai Sing Carryboy in their 10-round flyweight bout. Carryboy retired in the 7-round after 6 rounds of tactical beating from Banal.
Banal improved to 9-0-1 (8KOs) as Carryboy dropped to 11-1-0 (9KOs).
The fights were held September 23rd.
Yukka Also With A Successful Comeback
San Andres Gym, Manila, Philippines - Like Rodel Mayol, fellow Filipino Minimumweight star Eriberto "Yukka" Gejon also had a successful comeback fight, September 22. He TKO'ed Japanese upstart Yoddoi Sithsoei in the 2nd round of their supposedly 10-round encounter. It was Gejon's first fight after failing to capture the WBC Minimumweight Title from Japanese Yutaka Niida, September of 2005.The TKO happened at the 1:58 mark of the 2nd round.Gejon improves to 22-1-1 (14KOs) as Sithsoei dropped to 0-3.
